<image:caption>Let us hasten to Gethsemane to prepare and pray for strength to stand bravely on Calvary, when Our Lord calls us to do so. "Father if it be possible let this chalice pass from me, nevertheless not my will, but thine be done." When the shadow of the Cross falls we will be brave, we will stand with the mother of sorrows, with the beloved disciple, with the Magdalen; then we will be more peaceful as the time of sorrow passes and we rise again with our Risen Lord. We offer up our thoughts over this period of Our Lord's life in honour of and in union with the sorrowful heart of our Mother Mary. We will strive to go hand in hand with her, heart to heart with her, step by step we will tread the way to Calvary.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Way Of The Cross - I - Jesus Is Condemned To Die</image:title>
<image:caption>The way of Jesus led to humiliation and shame. Each hour was loaded with its separate pain, to fill up the chalice his Father had given him to drink. He had been led to the hall of Pilate to be judged. Pilate knew full well he had no right to condemn the innocent, nor to punish the one who had done no wrong. Jesus submits to this injustice, He gave an example in this as in all else. The Holy one bids us learn of him, to be humble of heart to take up our Cross and follow him.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - II - Jesus Takes His Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>The Cross is raised on the shoulders of Jesus. We follow and watch our Lord and those who surround him. Did He not bear the heaviest part of what ever Cross you have? Is there a pain or suffering in this world that human beings ever had that their brother Jesus had not before them? We will take courage, we will walk in the steps of our Cross, we will bear our Cross bravely. We may faint under it, fall under it, but one thing we will not do, by his grace supporting us, by his grace helping us, we will not throw it from us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - III - Jesus Falls For The First Time</image:title>
<image:caption>Look upon your master prostrate on the ground. Review each pain, each ache, look long, let it not be a casual glance. Come and touch. His body is both clammy and burning with pain. Come and realise that this is our Jesus, and after having looked and loved and wept, burn with a desire to suffer something for him and with him. We may fall under our Cross, but we will not fling it away, and if indeed we fall we will rise again by God’s power.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - IV - Jesus Meets His Grieving Mother</image:title>
<image:caption>To see those we love suffering, we must see Jesus meeting his mother. We ourselves need help when our suffering is not so much our own as the grief we feel seeing the suffering of others. Who does not know the suffering which a husband feels when he cannot provide the necessaries of life for his wife and children or when he watches the mother with her worn face growing white like the sick child she is tending. His own heart is wrung and his cry goes up to heaven pleading for help. It is pure pain but he can liken it to Jesus’ Cross when Jesus carried his Cross and met his mother.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - V - Simon Helps Jesus Carry His Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>Scripture does not tell us that anything was offered to Jesus on his weary way to Calvary as it would be for most, when they had fallen from weakness and exhaustion. No, Jesus must rise and pursue his way. He must be goaded on. He cannot become inanimate and unconscious as people are when they fall. Therefore He must push on, therefore He must, wearied and worn still walk on, but He may have someone to help him with the weight of the Cross. Consider we are helping Jesus bear his Cross and that we should be as deserters to let it go, to give him as it were the weight or have to be forced like Simon was to carry it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - VI - Veronica Wipes The Face Of Jesus</image:title>
<image:caption>He knows his mother is looking at him. He knows she is near. She sees that sacred face besmeared with tears and blood. She remembers the beauty of his sacred infancy; she would tenderly go and wipe again that face but it may not be. This consolation is not for her, but how her heart expands with love. She sees Veronica approach without regard for anyone around, casting aside all human respect, wiping with her veil the face of Jesus. How does Our Lord reward love shown to him. His reward to Veronica the impression of his sacred face on her veil, is but an image of what He does to those who love him. His image is impressed upon their souls and He lives in them and therefore greatly does his Father love them.</image:caption>

We are fallen, what wonder if we feel the native earth! We only wonder when God raises us from that state to his own embrace showing us his beauty and the wonders of his ways and works. <image:caption>We are walking with you Jesus the way to Calvary. We have looked around the crooked streets of Jerusalem on the motley crowd. We look around at the various faces with their various emotions, their different passions, their different motives. We look at the calm face of Jesus, calm in the midst of its passion of suffering, for those it loves. Beautiful face of Jesus, calm with tears of anguish forced from the eyes that looked with love and compassion on poor human nature. Let us view the faces of the people, let us view the face of Jesus. “My people! My people! What have I done to you?”</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - IX - Jesus Falls For The Third Time</image:title>
<image:caption>We see Jesus in his painful journey to Calvary falling three times. Here He fell before the assembled multitude. He fell and He knew that his mother heard the sound … she was near at hand. He caused his mother pain and she knew also the pain that she gave him by her lacerated heart. She may know that the weight of the Cross is too heavy as He falls in the sight of a jeering multitude. His mother may not come and raise him tenderly, washing his wounds pressing him to her breast … she may not have even this consolation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - X - Jesus Is Stripped Of His Garments</image:title>
<image:caption>The way of Jesus led to humiliation and to shame. Christ our leader has suffered shame, humiliations of all kinds. So though our human nature shrinks, the grace given by God surmounts it and we know it is a holy and wholesome thing to suffer for one who suffered for us. Jesus help us in the hour when we may be called upon to suffer shame for love of our heavenly Father. He may see in our lives some resemblance to the son of his love. If we would lead our daily lives in union with the life of Jesus we must be put to shame and we must bear it bravely generously for Jesus.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - XI - Jesus Is Nailed To The Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>Jesus is placed upon the Cross. He stretches forth his arms. Imagine the body, the sacred flesh placed upon the Cross. Imagine Mary as she watches the babe of Bethlehem in his new cradle laid bare, exposed on that rude wood of the Cross. Jesus stretches forth his arms and offers himself with his whole heart, His hand is stretched out for the nail to pierce. Remember it is for love of us. It is for you and me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - XII - Jesus Dies On The Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>We wish to be one of those whom Jesus commended with his dying breath, to his Father “Father into your hands I commend my spirit”. We commend those we love in union with those dying words of Jesus, when we see them in their agony. We are anxious that they should fight that last fight well. We think there is no more efficacious cry to send to heaven than the cry from the dying lips of Jesus. “Father into your hands I commend My Spirit”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - XIII - Jesus Is Taken Down From The Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>Jesus is dead and Mary is watching his dead body. The eyes are closed; the lips move not; Jesus is dead. And our mother calmly sees the life which she has been the means to give to Jesus now gone. The adorable body of Jesus has now been laid out by Mary’s hands as reverently as may be. Mothers who have held their dead child in their arms, can enter a little into the feelings of the mother above all mothers. If there is one being in this world who knows what it is to suffer it is a mother … bless their mission in this world. “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Way Of The Cross - XIV - Jesus Is Placed In The Tomb</image:title>
<image:caption>Even on Calvary with the dead body of Jesus in her arms Mary was sorrowful but not sad. Oh the beauty of her resignation as she helped to wrap the body of Jesus in a winding sheet, Jesus has died. His life that mortal suffering life has passed, but its merits are ours, all ours. We are too often given to look at the sad side of Calvary and there is so much to make our hearts burn with the love that brings joy. Jesus had joy … there, God’s will was to be fulfilled, and we cannot be sad though we may be sorrowful in fulfilling God’s will. If we are in union with Jesus heart, there will come from it an echo of exultation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Way Of The Cross - XV - Resurrection</image:title>
<image:caption>The Resurrection … our hearts burn at the very word. Pure praise and thanksgiving, a Magnificat such as our Mother’s heart poured forth. She poured it forth while Jesus lay unborn within her. As Mary stood on the heights of Calvary her Magnificat of thanksgiving was in her heart unchanged. When Jesus had died and risen again how then did she thank God. When she saw Jesus risen how did her soul then magnify her Lord? How is she magnifying him now? Let us honour and join her Magnificat and let us praise him alike in Joy and sadness. In moments of gladness and in hours of trial, let us thank him for our joys and let us thank him for the grace He gives us to bear our sorrows. Our Lord has died and has risen again and we live in the glad day of his Resurrection.</image:caption>
